Facebook Launches Stand-Alone Messenger for the Web

Facebook on Wednesday launched a standalone version of its Messenger service for web browsers separate from Facebook’s main site. The new dedicated Messenger service is available at the Messenger.com website. Signing in with your Facebook account gives you access to the messaging service. But for viewing News Feed and Timelines, users will have to go to Facebook’s main site, where messaging will also still be available.Read more

Twitter Retires "Discover" Tab, Replaces It With "Tailored Trends"

Twitter today announced that it will now showcase trending topics under the search page on its mobile apps. Clicking the search bar will now bring you to “Tailored Trends” along with a short description of each trending topic. However, it also announced that it is retiring the #Discover tab, meaning you’ll no longer be able to see activities based on the people and topics you follow on the social media site.Read more

Twitter's Periscope App Now Updated With "Follower Only" Mode to Keep Total Strangers from Publicly Trolling You

Twitter launched Periscope, an app that lets you broadcast live video to the world, barely a months ago. Now, it has updated its livestream app acquisition with the introduction of the new “follower only” mode. “If you turn this on,” said Twitter, “only viewers that you follow can comment on your broadcast.” Everyone can only passively watch your broadcast, although they can still still tap their screens to launch hearts in your direction. It's a good way to keep total strangers from trolling you publicly.Read more

Google Set to Offer Ad-Free Subscription-Based Online Videos on YouTube

Mozilla Disables Newly Released "Opportunistic Encryption Feature" in Firefox

On March 31, Mozilla released the latest version of Firefox, 37.0 which introduces a new feature that can cryptographically protect connections even when servers don't support the HTTPS protocol. Dubbed “opportunistic encryption,” it acts as a bridge between plaintext HTTP connections and fully compliant HTTPS connections based on transport layer security or its predecessor, protocol secure sockets layer. But on April 3, Mozilla released Firefox 37.01, a minor maintenance release of the browser that disables the “opportunistic encryption” as a result of a vulnerability related to certificate verification.Read more
