Netflix's "13 Reasons Why" has received positive reviews from critics with the performances of the cast, story, direction, and visuals being praised the most. Its mature approach and how it undertakes an adult subject matter has been positively reviewed. However, others say that the storyline is too tedious in trying to deliver the message and some parents say that the series is extremely horrifying. Recently, reports quickly circulated online that Netflix is renewing the series for a second installment despite its controversies.
"13 Reasons Why" showrunners, as well as its stars, have been defending the controversial series, which premiered on March 31, 2017, on Netflix. Selena Gomez, who executive produce the breakout series has also responded to critics and said that the series is only trying to deliver a message to all teens that harsh realities in this world do exist. Huffington Post reports that many suicide and assault experts are greatly concerned with the series' extremely graphic content.
The success of Brian Yorkey's "13 Reasons Why" has surprised and overwhelmed Selena Gomez, which is something that fans would concur. She explained that she understands what the message is all about.
