Dave Chappelle recently took part in an interview where he opened up about his true feelings for "Key & Peele." This comes ahead of his new comedy specials that will be aired on Netflix.
In an interview with "CBS This Morning," the star aired his grievances towards the series led by fellow comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. Dave Chappelle says that Comedy Central's failure to acknowledge his contribution to the success of the series had hurt his feelings.
"When I did 'Chappelle's Show,' there were certain conventions of the show that the network resisted," Dave Chappelle said, according to Entertainment Weekly. "I fought the network very hard so that those conventions could come to fruition." He admitted that he was hurt when he saw that "Key & Peele" did the format that he had envisioned for his old show and credited Key and Peele only.
During the interview, Dave Chappelle also discussed his time on the now defunct "Chappelle Show," which ran for two seasons. The comedian famously quit the show at the height of his success. He walked away from a $50 million deal and left for South Africa to escape the fame. "I was talkin' to a guy... he basically said to me that comedy is a reconciliation of paradox," he said, according to CBS News.
Dave Chappelle recalled the time a guy had told him that comedy is "a reconciliation of paradox," which was something he did not agree with. "I was in this very successful place, but the emotional content of it didn't feel anything like what I imagined success should feel like. It just didn't feel right," he explained.
Meanwhile, the de facto successors of Dave Chappelle have since followed in his footsteps. Key and Peele's show ended after five seasons and left Comedy Central altogether to seek greener pastures. Two of Chappelle's comedy specials "The Age of Spin" and "Deep In the Heart of Texas" will be released today, according to Heavy.
