There was a storm of comments and posts following the actress Jada Pinkett Smith's most recent outburst in social media platforms Facebook and Twitter. The actress was upset to see that even after being associated with deserving films, people of color were not named in the nominations. White people are the only ones recognized by the 88th Academy Awards this year. Apparently, Smith isn't approving of this.
As reported by Sky News, Jada feels it's a complete waste to even participate in the mentioned event. She feels the organization lacks respect for the entire community, plus there is not a single sign of diversity being visible either.
The 44 year old actress highlights the fact about the hard work done by some of the finest actors in the industry and because of this issue their work is threatened to be unnoticed. Their work has been overlooked against those of the white race.
Will Smith's spouse asked the event runner about these scenarios. She also admits to confusion whether people of color should boycott the Oscars totally and not participate at the event, where their work is obviously ignored because of their race. The Sidney Morning Herald reported that the blacks are given work in the industry and invited at celebrity events, but when it comes to the Oscars, these colored people are just mere observers and weren't given the chance to be hailed.
Winning or losing against white people for awards are not the issue, what drives Smith to expressing disgust in this decision by the Academy was the obvious racial discrimination amongst the blacks, who, without any doubt, are as deserving to any award as the whites. Smith received a lot of support, similar talks and criticisms were fired at the Academy for making such irrational steps. Chris Rock, the man announced to be hosting the ceremonies in February, referred to the Oscars as the "White Bet Awards".
Joining the heated conversation, actor Roy Wood Jr. shared his comments noting the incident. According to him, he's really unsure about why the jury got only white entries for the Oscar nominations.
For instance, the movie "Gangster Rap" made its way to the Oscars and on this film, only the whites were nominated as well. If the reason behind the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations are confirmed to be purely about race, there should be changes made to the existing system being followed at this prestigious institution.
