Walt Disney's Ant-Man, the twelfth main installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film franchise, will be shown in theaters beginning July 17. While the full-length official trailer is still set for release Monday, a new thirty-second teaser clip was dropped at today's MTV Awards show featuring an off-camera Darren Cross/Yellow Jacket pitching a shrinking-growing suit capable of creating "a soldier the size of an insect", while the character Michael Douglas plays warns about the possibility of the technology falling into the wrong hands.
Peyton Reed directs the upcoming Ant-Man movie, with Kevin Feige producing and Louis D'Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo, Edgar Wright and Stan Lee serving as executive producers. The screenplay, based on a story by Edgar Wright and Paul Cornish, was co-written by Adam McKay with Paul Rudd who is also the movie's titular star.
Paul Rudd portrays master thief Scott Lang who acquires an invention that allows him to shrink in scale but increase in strength, making him the new Ant-Man. Michael Douglas plays Dr. Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, and the inventor of the new technology. He recruits Lang and becomes his mentor. Together, they strive to protect the secret behind the spectacular Ant-Man suit. They also must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Corey Stoll plays the villain Darren Cross, a former protege of Pym, who takes over Pym's company and acquires the Ant-Man technology to create the Yellowjacket suit, which he described as "a suit that is sort of the next generation of Ant-Man's suit. It can do everything that Ant-Man can do, but more. It's more badass, more militaristic, sleeker... sort of like if Apple had designed a battle suit."
The Ant-Man cast also includes Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, the daughter of Dr. Pym and Janet Van Dyne, the Wasp. Regarding her character, she was heard in an Empire podcast saying: "I was raised by two superheroes. So, I'm a pretty screwed up human being. I am also fairly capable, strong, and kick-ass, which is wonderful to play, but the most fun to play was just how messed up she was from being raised by two superheroes. And the clear message sent by my name is that I'm not a big fan of my father and so I took my mother's name."
There will be a flashback sequence in Ant-Man where Pym meets S.H.I.E.L.D.'s founders Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. Hayley Atwell portrays Peggy Carter while John Slattery plays Howard Stark. Others in the cast include Bobby Cannavale as Lang's friend Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Judy Greer as Lang's ex-wife Maggie, Tip 'T.I.' Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Wood Harris as Gale, Jordi Molla as Castillo, with Abby Ryder Fortson, Gregg Turkington, and Martin Donovan in as yet-unrevealed roles.
The studio's official synopsis for the film reads: "The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios' Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world."
