Blumhouse Productions' Jason Blum presented at Saturday's WonderCon comic book, science fiction, and motion picture convention at the Anaheim Convention Center a new poster along with a new two teaser clip [via Flickering Myth] for Focus Features' Insidious: Chapter 3, the third installment in the Insidious film franchise, which is set for release on June 5.
Franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell wrote, directed and co-starred in the new supernatural horror flick that will serve as a prequel to the two previous Insidious films. Joining Whannell in the main cast are Dermot Mulroney, Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, Stefanie Scott, Steve Coulter, Hayley Kiyoko, Ashton Moio, and Ele Keats. Blum was joined at the WonderCon panel by Whannel, Mulroney, Shaye, Scott and Kiyoko in attending to the fans' questions.
Insidious: Chapter 3, according to the official synopsis, is set at a time before the haunting of the Lambert family which was the focus of the two previous Insidious movies. It reveals how the gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Shaye) first reluctantly agreed to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity. It introduces audience to the mysteries of the otherworldly realm 'The Further.'
The first film in the franchise, Insidious, made for $1.5 million and released in 2010, went on to gross $97 million worldwide while Insidious: Chapter 2 grossed $160 million worldwide and was made for $5 million. Both films, which were also written by Whannell, were directed by franchise co-creator James Wan.
Insidious: Chapter 3, reportedly also being made with a $5 million budget has already been test screened before a pilot audience and it was positively received. Said Whannel in an interview with Collider: "We have done a test screening and it's a great experience... we actually videotape the audience and watch it back. I'm really proud of this film...I'm really happy with the finished product. I actually think it ties into the first two films [which he wrote and Wan directed], but it's kind of its own thing. Even James said that when he saw, he looked over and was...really happy with that, happy that it was different. I can't wait for people to see it." He added: "I hope that the title, Insidious: Chapter 3, I hope that doesn't mean that people go in there expecting low quality. There haven't been many good Part 3's of anything in the world, I mean not even the Godfather Part 3 was great."
Whannel and Wan have also partnered in the creation of the highly successful Saw film franchise which has already expanded with six sequels that have drawn close to $900 million at the box office worldwide. Predominantly a writer and an actor, the 37-year-old Whannell took over the directing job in the making of Insidious: Chapter 3 while partner Wan, also 37, is still not yet through with his helming duties for Fast & Furious 7.
