Warner Brothers has hired Jason Segel and Drew Pearce to co-write and co-direct The Billion Brick Race, another spinoff from last year's hugely successful and universally acclaimed The Lego Movie.
Segel, 35, is better known for his work as an actor, having starred in several films, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Sex Tape, Knocked Up, The Muppets, Despicable Me and The Five-Year Engagement as well as appearing in TV as Marshall Eriksen in CBS' sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Drew Pearce, 39, is the writer behind the screenplay for Marvel's Iron-Man 3 starring Robert Downey Jr. He is also the co-writer of the script for Tom Cruise's upcoming movie, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation.
The original The LEGO Movie, which was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller alongside Chris McKay, grossed $468 million at the worldwide box office. Last month, Warner Bros. announced that a sequel, aptly titled The Lego Movie Sequel, scheduled for a 2018 release, will be directed by Rob Schrab. Lord and Miller who will be writing the script previously already hinted that it will take place four years after the events of the first film.
A spinoff movie starring the Batman character in the first film, titled The Lego Batman Movie, is set for a 2017 showing. It will be directed by McKay based on a script from Seth Grahame-Smith and it will have Will Arnett reprising his Lego Batman character.
Another spinoff, Lego Ninjago, which will feature a new take that on the TV series Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu, will be released on September 23, 2016. It will be directed by Charlie Bean from a screenplay by Dan and Kevin Hageman. A Lego Ninjago sequel is also expected to be ready for a 2018 showing.
The Billion Brick Race, the latest spinoff project to be given the green light by the studio for development, will have Lord, Miller, Dan Lin and Roy Lee as producers along with Courtenay Valenti oversee for Warner Bros.
