Wes Craven to Make TV Adaptation of Steven Niles' Comic Book Series "The Disciples"

Wes Craven, 75, the iconic horror filmmaker best known for creating the A Nightmare on Elm Street, Screams, and The Hills Have Eyes film franchises, is partnering with Steve Niles, 49, the comic author who co-created 30 Days of Night, to bring the upcoming comic series The Disciples to the small-screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Disciples, a sci-fi horror story set in space written by Niles and drawn by Christopher Mitten, is due to hit the newsstands in May from Niles' publishing company, Black Mask Studios. Aside from the 30 Days of Night comics, Niles is also the graphic novel author of Criminal Macabre, Simon Dark, Mystery Society and Remains. On the other hand, his artistic partner Mitten's past work includes Umbral and various covers, including Batman: Arkham Unhinged and Ash & the Army of Darkness.

Universal Cable Productions is in the process of picking up the rights to Niles' The Disciples title. Craven will be joined in executive producing the TV adaptation project by Sara Bottfeld of Industry Entertainment along with Niles and his Black Mask Studios partner and co-founder Matt Pizzolo.

The Disciples will be Craven's second time adapting a comic series to live-action, his first being the 1982 Swamp Thing feature film based on the DC Comics series of the same name created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson.

Craven's TV work credits include creating the short-lived six-episode Nightmare Cafe series, a mystical fantasy show about second chances which aired on the cable channel Chiller, and co-creating the equally short-lived sitcom series The People Next Door which was aired on CBS. He also directed, produced and/or wrote a number of made-for-TV movies including They Shoot Divas, Don't They? (2002), Don't Look Down and Carnival of Souls (1998), Night Visions (1990), Shocker (1989), Chiller (1985), Invitation to Hell (1984), Kent State (1981), and Stranger in Our House (1978).
