Gina Rodriguez, 30, a Golden Globe Award winner for her role as Jane Villanueva in The CW's Jane the Virgin TV series, is set to play the female lead opposite Mark Wahlberg in Lionsgate and Participant Media's disaster film Deepwater Horizon, according to The Wrap.
Based on the New York Times article "Deepwater Horizon's Final Hour" written by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul, the film will follow events revolving around the 2010 explosion in the Gulf Of Mexico of the Deep Horizon, the British Petroleum oil rig, where 11 men were killed and 17 others injured as they worked on the platform. The explosion and the subsequent emission of oil continued to emanate for around three months, making it the biggest oil spill in the history of the United States.
Wahlberg is set to play Mike Williams, one of the electricians who was on the rig when the explosion occurred, while Rodriguez will take the role of Andrea Fleytas, the 23-year-old employee who was hired to monitor the safety systems of Deepwater Horizon as the oil rig began to explode. Fleytas, according to the story, was overseeing the oil rig's navigation machinery when she noticed that no one had issued a distress signal. After she grabbed the radio and tried to contact the Coast Guard, she was reportedly reprimanded for her actions.
Peter Berg has signed up to direct based on a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan, J.C. Chandor and Matthew Sand. Lionsgate and Participant Media have partnered with Lorenzo di Bonaventura for the production of Deepwater Horizon. The announced release date to theaters of the film is September 30, 2016.
Deepwater Horizon will mark Rodriguez's biggest feature to date, although she previously played the lead role in the 2013 indie Filly Brown for which she won an Imagen Award for best actress.
