David Hasselhoff, star of the popular Knight Rider and Baywatch TV series during the 1980s and the 1990s, is cast as Gilbert Sheperd, the father of Ian Ziering's character, Fin, in Sharknado 3, the third installment in the satirical made-for-TV disaster film about a waterspout that lifts sharks out of oceans and deposits them in populated urban areas, eating people and otherwise creating mayhem, which is set to debut in July on Syfy.
While the original Sharknado caused widespread panic and mayhem in Los Angeles in 2013, and Sharknado 2 did much about the same in New York City in 2014, the upcoming Sharknado 3 which will be set in Washington, D.C., this time and, as per Syfy's teaser, will "cause mass destruction in the nation's capital" before it roars down the Eastern Seaboard.
Hasselhoff and Sharknado regular Ziering will be joining the other previously announced cast members which include Tara Reid as April, Cassie Scerbo as Nova, Bo Derek as April's mother, May, Ryan Newman as April and Fin's daughter Claudia, and Jack Griffo as Claudia's friend, Billy. Also confirmed to be seen in the next Sharknado movie are Jerry Springer, appearing as Mr. White, a manic tourist; 'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick as a pool lifeguard; and Chris Jericho, who will play Bruce, a roller-coaster ride operator. As with the first and second Sharknado movies, surprise cameo appearances from other celebrities may be expected. Anthony C. Ferrante will also return to direct the latest chapter in the apparently continuing Sharknado saga.
Produced by The Asylum, Sharknado 3 will notably also star entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban of Shark Tank as the US President, while controversial conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter will play the Vice President.
In related news, members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) who are working on the production crew walked off their posts during Wednesday's filming of scenes for Sharknado 3 in Washington, D.C. in protest of their working conditions. The walk-off follows last week's strike that halted production of the film over at the West Coast. The protesters are reportedly asking for benefits, as well as standardized wages and working conditions.
