Google Play Music just raised the capacity of it's free music locker service from 20,000 songs to 50,000, giving users more than double the capacity to store their own collection in the cloud, over and above the extensive streaming library that makes up Google Play Music's own category. Now, instead of relying entirely on the collection that Google has specifically licensed, you can supplement it by uploading your entire collection from your own computer, and then stream or download that music to virtually any device that's connected to the internet.

According to Softpedia, there's no official announcement from Google about this sudden increase in cloud storage space, and the Google Play Music website still states that you can upload up to 20,000 songs. But once you sign up for the free music service and connect your Google account, you will see a notice which says: "Encore! Encore! Now you can upload up to 50,000 of your favorite songs and listen to them on your phone or on the web." Click the "Got it" button and the notification will disappear. Now you can start uploading your songs on Google Play Music for free and listen to them on the go, wherever you are. To upload your songs fast, Softpedia suggests you to use the official Google Music Manager application, which runs on GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows computer operating systems. Of course, you can also import your music library from iTunes or Windows Media Player, the tech site adds.

Google Music's storage locker powers, observed Gizmodo, is one of the biggest differentiators between Google Music and key competitors like Spotify. The new increased storage capacity limit is just the latest bit of value that Google has added to its service. It's really been improving both its free and subscription offerings recently.
