Wednesday night at the Brit Awards at the O2 Arena in London, Madonna, 56, took to the stage with her back to the audience in a bolero-style outfit draped in a long, sweeping black Armani cape carried by dancers dressed as devils. She walked up some steps with her backup singers following closely behind. The choreographed plan was for one of the backup dancers to pull the cape off of her, dramatically revealing the sparkly outfit underneath. And he did. Unfortunately, the cape was tied too tight. Before she could unfasten it, Madonna came crashing down neck first with her cape onto the stage. It seemed it took a full minute for her to collect herself. Then Madonna immediately got back to her feet and continued with her performance of "Living for Love" until the very end.
Madonna later told her fans that she was "fine" and that her cape had been "tied too tight." According to BBC News, she also posted on her Instagram page: "Nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up. Thanks for your good wishes!" TMZ noted: "It's the first time in 20 years Madonna performed at the Brit Awards. Good bet it will take another 20 to get her back."
In related news, Kanye West's debut performance of his new single "All Day" at the Brits Awards was also a disaster as far as home viewers are concerned. Large sections of his song had to be muted by ITV network because of explicit language, causing outrage from television viewers. The lyrics of the song reportedly mentions the n-word 39 times.
Aside from Madonna and Kanye West, the other performers at the Brits Awards show were Taylor Swift with "Blank Space," Sam Smith with "Lay Me Down," Royal Blood with "Figure It Out," Ed Sheeran with "Bloodstream," Take That with "Let in the Sun," George Ezra with "Budapest," and Paloma with "Only Love Can Hurt Like This."
