While filming for the Getting To Know Special which aired Saturday, it was learned that Teen Mom Original Girls' Amber Portwood had flatly refused to watch her scenes in the footage of their 16 and Pregnant episodes as well as their four seasons of Teen Mom. Although she managed to sit through some scenes from 16 and Pregnant, she was unrelenting in her objection to being made to watch her years on Teen Mom.
Amber told her producers why. She said: "I can just see myself completely going downhill. I can't watch Teen Mom. Because I'm high the whole time. It wasn't happy moments of my life at all. It's like an alcoholic watching footage himself back in the day being drunk, you know what I'm saying? That's the only way I can explain it. I will talk about the past with you guys, but I'm not gonna watch Teen Mom clips."
Amber narrated how she got hooked on prescription drugs. She said she was prescribed Klonopin to help with her post-baby anxiety. She continued: "You could tell something was up I was out of it a little bit. They told me I had Scoliosis but I never went and got it checked out like I was supposed to. But I still got prescribed opiates for it. And that's when it just spun out of control. [In] Teen Mom you see how everything changes. You can just tell. I would stay up all day and all night taking drugs 24 hours, and then I would get so high that I'd forget that I took pills, and I'd take more. A whole script would be gone in less than a week. That's 180 opiates."
Drug-addled, Amber often fought with her fiancé Gary Shirley, the father of daughter Leah Lean. At one point, she beat Gary so badly that he was left with permanent scars. She got arrested for domestic violence against her fiancé. She also opted out of her court-ordered drug rehab program following which she was given a five-year jail sentence. However, after serving four years, she was given an early release from Indiana's Rockville Correctional Facility.
Amber has reportedly sobered up and is now dating Matthew Baier, a man she met following her release from prison.
MTV's Teen Mom Original Girls premieres Monday, March 23, at the 10 pm time slot. Aside from Amber, the reality TV series also stars stars Farah Abraham, Catelynn Lowell and Maci Bookout.
