While still unconfirmed, both Tech Crunch and Recode have already reported that Microsoft is buying mobile calendar app maker Sunrise Atelier Inc. Microsoft has reportedly agreed to acquire Sunrise in what would be the second acquisition of a top mobile application maker in just a few months, and which would be consistent with CEO Satya Nadella's new "mobile first, mobile everywhere" slogan.
In November, Microsoft bought email app Acompli for $200 million which it is now using as the core of a new Outlook app for iOS and Android. In the press announcement for the deal, Microsoft VP Rajesh Jha in charge of Outlook said: "Our goal is to deliver fantastic cross-platform apps that support the variety of email services people use today and help them accomplish more."
As gathered by Tech Radar, the Redmond-based company is said to have paid more than $100 million for the acquisition of Sunrise, a software company best known for its series of calendar products for both desktop and mobile users. Like what it did with Acompli, Microsoft is reportedly going to keep the service running 'as-is' meaning existing Sunrise apps won't be disappearing any time soon. The current Sunrise apps will remain as stand-alone products. However, the company will likely also incorporate some of Sunrise's technology into its own future products.
Sunrise currently offers a suite of calendar products for mobile and desktop users that connects with and consolidates calendars from different providers. It's available on the iPhone, iPad, Android devices, and on the Mac App Store, as well as offering a web client. Users can access their calendars from Google, iCloud, and Microsoft Exchange, as well as connect to a wide range of other third-party apps. Sunrise was founded on February 19, 2013, in New York City by software designers Pierre Valade, Jeremy Le Van.
