Marshawn Lynch, the Seattle Seahawks running back dubbed 'Beast Mode' because of his aggressive running style and his penchant for breaking tackles, did show up for the Super Bowl Media Day at the US Airways Center in Phoenix on Tuesday, January 27. If he did not, he reportedly faces a $500,000 fine from the NFL.
Lynch, introduced that day by his coach Pete Carroll to the media as "unique," sat at his designated spot on the podium wearing sunglasses, a baseball cap and a backpack. He listened and entertained every question from the reporters, something he refused to do during last year's event in New Jersey. He was asked a total of 29 different questions. To each of them, his unwavering reply was, "I'm just here so I won't get fined." At some points, says USA Today, he varied it to add a "hey" in front of the statement, said "hi" to someone in the audience, and "what's up, bud?" to another. Many in the crowd found his antics amusing and they cheered him on.
After four minutes and 51 seconds have passed, Lynch said, "Time." He got up, walked off the podium and left his coaches and teammates to finish the hour-long session with the members of the press and the fans who were there who paid the fee for watching the show live. Apparently, they were fine with what their media-shy teammate just did. Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman later told New York Daily News that "I don't think (players) should be obligated any more than the commissioner is obligated to speak to the media." Lynch has already been fined by the league repeatedly for his constant refusal to talk to the media.
