The Gary Rydstorm directed film, Strange Magic is definitely strange but lacks the magic of animation unlike other popular animated films.
The movie is a comical fairy tale that incorporates the jukebox of love and pop songs. For most of its viewers, it is still unclear who the target audience for the movie is. Even though Rydstorm has won an Oscar seven times for sound design, the script of the movie and the associated music flows in a very odd manner that makes the a little confusing for the viewer to comprehend what's going on.
When interviewed, the writer and producer of the movie, George Lucas revealed that his vision of the movie was to use lyrics from different love songs to showcase a fairytale love story of two creatures. Movie critics suggest that the Lucasfilm's production has a mix of scenes from other sources like A Midsummer Night's Dream (William Shakespeare), Ferngully, and The Nutcracker Ballet. This movie is a story of two fairy sisters, Marianne and Dawn. Marianne calls off her wedding with Roland upon finding his true intent of marrying her while Dawn likes every other eligible man in the fairyland and longs to fall for one of them. A few animated characters in the movie are reportedly influenced by siblings Elsa and Anna from the movie Frozen.
The movie features a mix of songs from different singers, be it Beyonce Knowles, Lady Gaga, or Elvis Presley. The songs have been included to such an extent that it doesn't actually make any sense for the intended target audience, the kids to watch the animated film.
Rated at two stars out of four, this movie stars Meredith Anne Bull as Dawn, Evan Rachel Wood as Marianne, Sam Palladio as Roland, Elijah Kelly as Sunny, Maya Rudolph as Griselda, Kristen Chenoweth as Sugar Plum Fairy, and Alan Cumming as Bog King.
