There was a Left 4 Dead 3 release date set already that turned out to be false. That there is even a 'Left 4 Dead 3' game in the works now is just conjecture from fan sites like Left 4 Dead 3 which by its own admission has nothing to do with game developer and publisher Valve Corporation.
Of course, a Left 4 Dead 3 game could still happen in the future but there's no guarantee that the game will ever be made. Way back in January 2012, on being asked about the possibility of having a sequel to the sequel of the original Left 4 Dead game, Valve's Chet Faliszek told Eurogamer: "A 3? You know, sometime down the road. Like anything, I would say that to all of our games. So that's not a promise of when or where. I really love working on that series. It's one of my favorite series. It's just so much fun with the characters and the world. I love zombies and I love horror. So, yeah."
The original Left 4 Dead released on November 17, 2008, while the sequel, Left 4 Dead 2, on November 17, 2009. Eventually all Left 4 Dead campaigns were ported over to Left 4 Dead 2. Since then, the second game has received several DLC updates and patches, the most recent of which was on November 21, 2014, to fix an exploit that could shut down dedicated servers, a slow memory leak on Linux dedicated servers, and a buffer overflow exploit in Squirrel.
Valve is known for pre-releasing their games before an official launch is even announced. As Faliszek said to VG247 in another interview back in September 2012, "Telling people a game is great will sell one extra copy. Letting people play the game - Left 4 Dead is a good example - is much better. All of our pre-release stuff is designed to just let people play it. We just let the game speak for itself because the internet has made this thing where, you can't pull the wool over people's eyes any more. They're going to know you're hyping. But when a game does really well at pre-release, they're going to know that you're not just talking a bunch of PR crap. I mean, the Left 4 Dead series has now sold over 12 million copies." So, when or if Valve is ready with a 'Left 4 Dead 3,' chances are there will be pre-releases of the game for fans to try it out first before it is allowed to hit the retail outlets.
