The Good Wife returned from the holiday breaks Sunday, January 4, at 9:00 p.m. on CBS with its 11th episode entitled "Hail Mary." It featured Cary (Matt Czuchry) hiring a prison consultant to prepare him for incarceration while the team at Florrick/Agos/Lockhart did everything in its power to help him. At about the same time, Alicia (Julianna Margulies) was seen practicing for the State's Attorney candidates' debate. Chris Elliott guest starred as Adrian Fluke, an English professor brought in for Alicia's debate preparations, while Domenick Lombardozzi guest starred as Bill Kroft, Cary's prison consultant. In the end, the case against Cary was dismissed by Judge Cuesta (David Paymer) based on a document that was fabricated by Kalinda (Archie Panjabi). The news that Cary was not going to prison after all was relayed by Diane (Christine Baranski) to Alice who in the final scene was seen screaming with joy in the parking garage and then kissing her campaign manager Johnny (Steven Pasquale).

Following the mid-season premiere of season 6 of The Good Wife, a synopsis for next week's show was released by the network. It simply says that "Alicia and Frank Prady (David Hyde Pierce) square off in a crucial debate in the race for State's Attorney as Peter (Chris Noth) and the city of Chicago prepare for a potential riot." Although still untitled, this season's 12th episode was written by Executive Producers Robert King and Michelle King, and it was directed by Executive Producer Brooke Kennedy. Cable news host Chris Matthews will appear as himself as the debate moderator. Rachael Harris guest stars as Franny Zissis, an aide to the Mayor of Chicago. Other guesting in the upcoming episode are: Remy Auberjonois (Martin Parillo), Nicole Roderick (Nora), Angela Reed (Dakota Leesh), Chris Matthews (Himself), Rachael Harris (Franny Zissis), Jessica Frances Dukes (Deidre Willis), Patrick Boll (Evan Young), Michael Berresse (Patrick Mancini), Sean Nelson (Busboy Tim), Will Cobbs (Busboy Errol), Arturo Castro (Dishwasher Juan), Romell Witherspoon (Angry Youth), Elizabeth Rich (Lady Cop), Flint Beverage (Male Cop), Hubert Point-Du Jour (Protestor Jake), Stephen O'Reilly (George Hedden) and Robert Manning Jr. (Cole Willis).
