The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has won the U.S. box office for the third straight weekend bringing in $21.9 million. This was lower then previous Hobbit releases with An Unexpected Journey making $31.9 million its third weekend and The Desolation of Smaug with $29 million.
Unbroken and Into the Woods both opened Christmas day and spent their first weekend nearly tied at the box office, were close once again: Into the Woods took the number two spot with $19.1 million with Unbroken in third with $18.4 million. New horror movie The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death was a big surprise, earning $15.1 million and coming in fourth. Rounding out the top five was Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, starring Ben Stiller bringing in $14.5 million. The film has made $137.5 million to date.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott and James Nesbitt. It also features Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving and Orlando Bloom.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is directed by Peter Jackson and written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro and based on The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. The battle waged between the Goblins and the Wargs against Men of Dale, Elves, Dwarves, Eagles and a Shape-shifter on and near the Lonely Mountain.
The first 'Hobbit' movie An Unexpected Journey (2012), grossed a staggering $1 billion worldwide. The sequel The Desolation of Smaug (2013) was a bit less successful, bringing in $953 million worldwide.
