In the critical viewpoint, Transformers: Age of Extinction has not improved but the box office performance was impressive. The film commanded more than $1 billion gross worldwide (the second-highest among the series). This means that Paramount is up for a sequel.
According to a statement by Mark Wahlberg, he has a feeling that they will soon start filming for the fifth installment, although Michael Bay is not helming the fifth.
"Yeah, I committed to doing a couple more... you know I can't speak for Mr. Bay, but something tells me we'll be on the set soon," according to Screen Rant.
Paramount was quoted to targeting a 2016 release date for their tentpole projects - like that of Star Trek 3 and Transformer 5, so the studio should start the planning stage to give more time for the effects team for a very lengthy post-production process. Apparently, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is the series producer has said that there is no definite plans yet, so we can somehow say that 2016 target date is not accurate as it may seem.
The issue with the director is a big one, since Bay is not returning, and no potential candidates have emerged yet from the producers. Now, it would be hard to tell on what Wahlberg means by "soon".
In the past two installments, there was a gap of three years between Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction, and that gap did nothing to hurt the brand's financial prospects. This means that fans will have to wait for that same range especially that a new director is in line to Bay's throne.
Granted that the movie will be released sometime in 2017, there is the question on how in-demand the sequel would be. By that time, Marvel will dominate the screens so as with Star Wars sequels. Unless, of course, Paramount delivers something fresh and exciting for Transformers 5.
