Kevin Burgon, who starred alongside Brad Pitt in the hit movie Fury, has been arrested for keeping illegal World War 2 handgun.

The 53-year old actor was given more than a three year sentence in prison when police found out a 1937 Beretta handgun and ammo in his house after a routine inspection for his three other firearms that he keeps legally in his Hartlepool home. Burgon, who acted out a part in the movie Atonement in 2007-which also starred Keira Knightley-revealed that he has been the owner of the illegal Beretta for more than 20 years.

Burgon has been clearly in violation of the enacted license laws put in place after the tragedy in Dunblane School that happened in 1994.

Prosecutor Emma Atkinson told Express:

"Everything was in order with the three rifles on the first visit, but the following day the police visited with a search warrant in relation to other people and discovered the Beretta and ammunition on the bed.

"The defendant said he knew it was illegal, but said the gun hadn't been fired in more than 20 years and he had only removed it from the cabinet the day earlier when the routine inspection was carried out.

"He explained that he had a keen military interest and had owned this gun since the early 1990s.

"He said he didn't shoot it, he was just interested in the mechanics of it."

During a previous hearing on 12 November, Burgon had already pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited firearm and ammunition without the appropriate certificates. The judge who had jailed the military enthusiast for three years and four months, said that he had studied carefully the case of Burgon and took note of the early guilty plea. He says that even though he understood that Burgon has no malicious intent with it, it is still considered a serious offence, considering the various cases of homicides and shootings due to mishandling of firearms.

Since then, Burgon's previously owned firearms-the handgun and ammunition-has been ordered to be destroyed.
