During the eighth season of The Real Housewives of Orange County, Rossi, 35, and Smiley, 40, became engaged. However, instead of planning a wedding, the couple has decided to first have a child. In a new interview, Rossi and her fiance discussed their decision to move forward with in vitro fertilization.

"As we begin to age, we want to make sure that we’ve done everything possibly to ensure a healthy baby,” Smiley told OK! Magazine, via a Sept. 24 report by Radar Online.

Because of their family history of cancer (Smiley's 13-year-old son, Grayson, suffers from brain cancer), Rossi and Smiley opted for IVF treatments, and according to Rossi, the process has brought them closer as a couple.

“Actively pulling the trigger to make a baby is very powerful,” she said. “You go through every step together. As I’m crying and putting in shots that are very painful, Slade is right there with me.”

Although Rossi and Smiley are still planning to get married eventually, they are excited to start their family before they walk down the aisle.

“Slade and I have been together for five years,” Rossi explained. “We already feel married and know we’re meant to be together for the rest of our lives. It’d be pretty amazing to have our children at our wedding!”

Next month, Rossi and Smiley will appear on CBS' The Doctors to discuss their plans for baby.
