Zac Efron is opening up about his drug use.
During his recent travels with Man vs. Wild's Bear Grylls, Efron spoke out about his past struggles with drugs, claiming that he used in an effort to be socially accepted.
"The actor says it became impossible to go out in the world because, as he put it, the press followed him everywhere. So he needed what he called a 'social lubricant' to muster the courage to venture outside his house," TMZ reported on July 29.
In early 2013, Efron reportedly went to rehab for an addiction to alcohol, but it was later claimed by TMZ sources that the actor was actually addressing his addiction to cocaine. According to the source, Efron's drug use spiraled out of control during the filming of Neighbors, in which he starred alongside Seth Rogen.
"It was common knowledge he was struggling with cocaine," a source told the site, adding that Efron was a no-show on a number of days of filming.
At the time, sources told TMZ that Efron's problem was rooted in cocaine, but also claimed the actor dabbled with Molly, a pure form of Ecstasy.
In April of this year, Efron discussed his sobriety on an episode of the Today show, where he admitted to losing several friends after giving up drugs and alcohol.
"My parents are stoked. All my roommates are stoked. The people I work with, the people I really care about are so much happier," Efron explained. "And I feel so much better, so whoever my 'friends' are who are 'really worried,' I'm sorry."
