Tiffany Thornton may not have kidnapped her children, as her husband claimed.

Although Thornton's husband, Chris Carney, reportedly alleged that his wife, along with the help of his mother, took their two children from him in a reported kidnapping plot, sources close to Thornton now claim she did so in an effort to protect them from the recently-relapsed Carney.

"Tiffany Thornton says she'll come out of hiding—and bring her two kids home—but first, her husband has to get sober," TMZ reported on May 24.

On Thursday, TMZ revealed Carney had gone to the LAPD, claiming his wife abducted their two children, Kenneth, 20 months, and Bentley, two months. According to the report, Carney had alleged to police that he believed Thornton had taken the children because of her religious views -- and the fact that he wasn't religious himself. He also stated Thornton may have been suffering from postpartum depression.

One day later, Ruth Carney, who happens to be the mayor of Hot Springs, Arkansas, came forward, confirming (via TMZ) the children were in the care of herself and their mother, Thornton, after the two left town and headed for Thornton's family's home in Texas. At the time, Ruth credited their reason for leaving to Carney's drinking habits, for which he had previously gone to rehab.

While Carney claims he is nothing more than a "social drinker," Ruth reportedly felt there was more to the situation and found it best to remove Thornton and the children from the home they shared.

Now that things have settled down between them, the three parties are in communication and trying to work things out amicably.
