Clay Aiken has won a seat in Congress.

On Tuesday, the former American Idol star was said to have won the Democratic primary for a North Carolina congressional seat, following the death of his main rival, Keith Crisco.

"Aiken won what had been a hotly contested Democratic primary for a North Carolina congressional seat according to a final, unofficial vote count that was posted Tuesday, a day after the accidental death of his closest rival," the US News reported.

Aiken first announced plans to run for Congress in February of this year, revealing he would be attempting to take over the position currently held by Rep. Renee Ellmers, who is in her second term. In his video announcement, Aiken stressed his experience as a special education teacher and his working class roots. He also noted his success in the music industry, as well as his humanitarian work.

Just one day prior to the announcement, Crisco, 71, was found dead at his North Carolina home. Midday on Monday, May 12, Crisco had arrived home after running errands earlier in the day. According to Crisco's wife, Jane, she saw him driving up to the residence just before 1 p.m. and heard him open the door to their home. However, after hearing him call out, she went to check on him and found him lying in the doorway. Immediately, Jane phoned paramedics, but by the time they arrived, it was too late. Although they administered CPR, they were unable to revive Crisco.

On Monday, Aiken posted a message on his website, acknowledging the passing of Crisco.

"I am stunned and deeply saddened by Keith Crisco's death. Keith came from humble beginnings. No matter how high he rose - to Harvard, to the White House and to the Governor's Cabinet - he never forgot where he came from," the message read. "He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant. I was honored to know him."
