Demi Lovato may be old enough to drink, but when it came to her 21st birthday, Lovato made it a point to stay sober and enjoy the finer things in life.

After dealing with addiction struggles for years, Lovato is now happily sober and determined to teach others that there is more to life than drugs and alcohol.

"When you turn 21 the first thing you think about is alcohol. I want to change that," Lovato told Cosmopolitan for Latinas, according to a May 8 PEOPLE Magazine report. "I have fans that are going to turn 21, and I want them to know that there are other ways you can celebrate, not just by poisoning yourself and getting yourself into trouble."

While, Lovato admitted to the magazine that her wild times were often fun times, she also noted that most of her partying led to missing memories and phony friendships.

After years of drug and alcohol use, Lovato checked into rehab where she addresses "physical and emotional issues," as well as her addiction to drugs, specifically cocaine (she revealed in one interview that she snuck alcohol and cocaine onto planes on multiple occassions). Following her treatment, Lovato made the decision to move forward with her life without the influence of drugs and alcohol, and she is glad she did.

Now that she's sober, Lovato is more confident than ever, explaining that once she truly got to know herself, she found her inner beauty.

"For me, loving and accepting my flaws … Being comfortable in my own skin also makes me feel beautiful," she said.
