Adam Levine opened up about his Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in a new PSA for the "Own It" campaign, and in a new interview, the Maroon 5 front man and coach of The Voice is getting candid about the diagnosis and how it affects his life.
"I like to always make sure that whatever I’m promoting or talking about or discussing at length, is something that I have personal, hands on experience with," Levine explained to Us Weekly on Feb. 21. "And this is no different than anything else. This is an issue that’s very near and dear to my heart."
For years now, Levine has been helping to shed light on ADHD, and in June 2011, he became involved with the "Own It" campaign, which was created in collaboration with the Attention Deficit Disorder Association and the Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
"Own It" targets young adults who have previously been diagnosed with ADHD and explains how ADHD it could continue into adulthood. Levine, who was diagnosed with ADHD as a teen, said, "This campaign is important to me because it can help young adults and adults realize that there's a chance they may still have ADHD if they had it as a kid."
In Levine's upcoming PSA, the typically strong and vocal musician shares a softer side of himself, candidly revealing that even years after his diagnosis, he still struggles, at times, with his condition.
"When I was first diagnosed with ADHD, it wasn't a surprise because I had difficulty in high school focusing," he admitted. "And I think now, people notice my ADHD as an adult on a daily basis. When I can't pay attention, I really can't pay attention."
Adam Levine's PSA debuts on Feb. 24.
