Shayne Lamas tragically lost her second child on Feb. 9 after collapsing at her Orange County home and undergoing emergency surgery, which left her in a coma. Following the child's death, his father Nik Richie was able to hold, and name, the child.
After Lamas awoke from her coma, Richie was asked if he would like to see his son and, for closure, he did just that, cradling the 20-week-old baby as a religious affiliate of the hospital prayed for the child. At that point, Richie was also asked to name the child, so that the birth certificate could be filled out appropriately.
Amid his grief, Richie revealed that he had always wanted a son named Rex, so he chose Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie, Jagger after musician Mick Jagger.
Although Richie is glad he was able to see his son, he told the media that holding him was the hardest thing he's ever done.
On Feb. 19, Richie wrote a letter to his son, which he chose to share with the world.
"God has a plan for us all. He gave me an amazing son who will always watch over our family," Richie wrote in the letter provided to TMZ. "You saved your mother's life with your passing and I will never forget how much this means to me, R.J. In family, we sacrifice for each other. You gave your life for us. You showed me how to love."
"I need you to know that I held you, spoke to you, kissed you and that you'll be remembered," he continued. "You are perfect. You will always be my son. I'm proud of you, always. I love you, Rex Jagger Lamas-Richie."
While Lamas is doing better than she was at the time she was admitted into the hospital, Richie said she's not completely in the clear -- especially after a Valentine's Day cardiac arrest scare.
Lamas remains in the intensive care unit.
