Demi Lovato struggled with addiction for years, but luckily, with the help of rehab and a community of recovery, Lovato was able to get clean. Now, Lovato is healthy and sober, and thanking fans for keeping her alive.
"It's a great feeling knowing how to balance things in life. Feeling stronger and better than ever #2014," Lovato wrote on Twitter on Jan. 26.
Then, on Tuesday (the third anniversary of her album Unbroken, which was released shortly after she completed an inpatient rehab), Lovato continued the online positivity, thanking fans for keeping her alive.
"Happy Lovatic Day…I'm alive because of you all. Thank you….I love you all so much.. #YearsUnbroken," she said, moments later adding, "You CAN turn you life around. You can go through hell AND BACK. It IS possible. NEVER underestimate yourself. I BELIEVE IN YOU.."
In a Dec. 2013 interview with Access Hollywood, Lovato opened up about her past drug use, telling fans of the desperate measures she went through in the depths of her addiction.
"Something I've never talked about before, but with my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs. I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," Lovato confessed. "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it. That's how difficult it got and that was even with somebody [with me]. I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me [and] I was able to hide it from them as well."
Lovato's addiction raged on for years until, at the age of 19, she hit rock bottom.
"I was going to the airport and I had a Sprite bottle just filled with vodka and it was just 9 in the morning and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to L.A. to the sober living house that I was staying at," she recalled. "When I hit that moment I was like, it's no longer fun when you're doing it alone."
