Leah Calvert and her family struggled for years to deal with her daughter Ali's medical issues, and for the longest time, no one knew what exactly she was dealing with. However, the illness has since been confirmed to be a rare and incurable form of muscular dystrophy, and in a new interview, Calvert is opening up about the devastating ordeal.
"We were scared because we didn't know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers," Calvert told In Touch Weekly on Jan. 21 of discovering Ali's diagnosis. "We never gave up, and we never will. We'll do everything we can to make sure Ali has the life that she needs."
"The disorder affects her respiratory system and progresses the older she gets," Calvert explained. "The bigger she gets and the more weight she gains, the harder it'll be for her muscles to carry the weight."
Although Ali is currently walking, she will soon use a wheelchair full-time. Because of this, the Calvert family plans to sell their recently purchased dream home and move into a new, handicap accessible home.
Calvert's ex-husband, Corey Simms, has also been very involved in making sure that Ali is well-cared for.
"Ali's condition has brought up all extremely close together," Calvert said. "We have to stay strong for Ali, and things are going good."
As for the recent rumors of divorce, which stemmed from a claim Calvert made during the season five trailer (saying her husband was filing for divorce the next day), she claims there's nothing to worry about.
"This is his first marriage -- he's still learning you can't throw that word around," she explained. "We both know we'd never get a divorce. Both of us are too happy."
Teen Mom 2 season five is currently airing on Tuesdays on MTV at 10 p.m.
