Prince Harry has finally begun his trek to the South Pole after bad weather forced him and his team of injured servicemen to turn back before they had even begun.
At around 1:35 pm on Monday, December 2, the clouds lifted and the prince led his 12 colleagues on the first of the 208-mile trek to Earth's southernmost point for the South Pole Allied Challenge.
The race consists of three teams, Harry's Team Glenfiddich, representing Britain,Team Noom Coach of the US, and Team Soldier On, from the Commonwealth. Each is raising money for military charities from their home countries. Harry's team currently in the lead, according to a release from the South Pole Allied Challenge organization as reported by E! News.
"Team Glenfiddich were leading for the first few minutes, with the Commonwealth (Soldier On) Team close on their heels and the US (Noom Coach) Team behind, weaving their way through the sastrugi," said expedition manager Victoria Nicholson. "The sastrugi is really challenging - we don't know if it is going to be like this all the way to the Pole but the teams are all happy and raring to go."
"All teams built their camps last night in good spirits despite feeling exhausted from the short but tough ski," the release reads. "It will take all the teams a day or two to get into their strides, as they all required rest and rehydration last night to set them up for a strong day today, it is estimated that each team will complete approximately nine hours of skiing today."
