Demi Lovato has opened up about her struggles with Nylon, PEOPLE reported Monday.

The 21-year-old X Factor host lamented that child stars often grow up too fast which is what happened to her. As a young star on Disney, she was the primary earner in her family. Therefore, she did always take too kindly towards her family disciplining her.

"My parents tried to control me, but I'd be like, 'Oh really, I'm grounded? Well, I pay the bills,' " she said. "They did the best they could. And I think that's why a lot of young stars struggle when they're making money or providing for their family."

Lovato entered rehab in 2010 for issues related to cutting herself and a bipolar condition. She also confessed to having a "nervous breakdown" while touring with the Jonas Brothers in 2010. She punched a girl in the face while on the tour.

"My mentality was 'Work hard, play hard,'" she said in the magazine's Dec/Jan issue. "It was hard to listen to the word 'no.' I wanted to make my own rules. I thought that if I was adult enough to get there, then I could party like an adult. And obviously, I couldn't."

Lovato felt that she has moved past who she once was. She now wanted to be a help to others. She launched a scholarship to help others struggling with mental help issues.

"I would like to separate myself from being the girl who overcame her issues, or the Disney chick who ended up in rehab while she was still on Disney," she said. "I don't want people to hear my songs on the radio and be like, 'Oh, that's the girl who cut.'"
