Beck said that a "severe" spinal injury was preventing him from working and forcing him to scale back his music output in the past years Rolling Stone reported.
The 43-year-old musician revealed his health issues in an interview with Argentina's Pagina/12 newspaper. He also admitted that the ailment was the reason for his hindered work on the follow-up to 2008's Modern Guilt. The article has been translated into English on TheFutureHeart.com.
"I had some injuries. I had severe damage to my spine, but now it's improving so I'm back in the music. It was a long, long recovery. Lately I concentrated on playing guitar. Do not think I can move again as before, although I can give a lot onstage," Beck said.
Morning Phase, Beck's 12th studio album is to be released next year. He also revealed that he had an album of new material back in 2008 but he abandoned the work because the tracks stopped being fresh for him. In 2010, he resumed his work in the project.
"I have a bunch of songs I recorded about four years ago that I'm hopefully going to try to finish. I'm not sure if it's relevant anymore," he said.
The multi-instrumentalist has not been fully out of the public eye during his health struggle, he has contributions to albums by different artists such as Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Morning Phase, to be released in February 2014, is said to be the "companion piece" to his 2010 album Sea Change.
