Sir Paul McCartney has come to the defense of Miley Cyrus, Billboard reported Monday.
The 20-year-old Wrecking Ball singer has faced immense backlash since her MTV VMA performance in August. She twerked on Robin Thicke and used a foam finger suggestively. The Beatles legend came to her defense during an interview with Sky News.
"I think it was only mildly shocking," he said when asked about Cyrus' provocative performance. "So what? Come on, we've seen worse than that!"
McCartney said that he would still allow his 10-year-old daughter Beatrice to listen to the provocative pop star.
"You look at it and you say, 'What's everyone shouting about?'" he said.
McCartney also offered advice to current British boy band du jour, One Direction. He addressed the comparisons that the group were the "new Beatles" . He did feel it was fair to make that comparison and that the band should be able to be themselves.
"I always think it's unfortunate for a band to be called the new Beatles because it can be the kiss of death," he said. "People expect you to live up to what we did, and we did what we did in a particular period in time, which is very different from now."
