Katy Perry: 'Roar' Dethrones 'Blurred Lines' on Hot 100

Katy Perry has her eighth #1 on the Hot 100 in the single Roar, Billboard announced Wednesday.

Roar rose from 2 to 1 on the charts. In doing so, Perry's lead single from her forthcoming album dethroned Robin Thicke's Blurred lines. Blurred Lines had been the number one in the country for the past 12 weeks. Roar accomplished the feat of dethroning Thicke by selling 448,000 in downloads for the week ending Sept. 1. Perry's sales were helped by her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. To date, Roar has sold more than 1 million in its three weeks of release.

Perry's other top charters include I Kissed A Girl, ET, Fireworks and Teenage Dream. She now joins Mariah Carey, Madonna, Rihanna and Janet Jackson with the women who have the most number one singles. Perry took to Twitter to acknowledge her triumph.

When Roar was released on August 12, Perry was immediately pitted against Lady Gaga as she released her single Applause that same day. Applause receded 4-6 on the Hot 100 chart and has sold half of what Roar has.
