Katie Couric has opened up about her engagement to banker John Molner in the latest issue of PEOPLE magazine.

The talk show host shared her surprise when her beau of nearly two years asked her to be his wife. Initially, she did not understand why he had whisked her away to the beach.

"He said that there was a reason he'd brought me there to the beach, and that he loved me and was committed to me, and I said, 'Yeah, I know that, you didn't have to bring me here to tell me that,'" Couric said.

The 56-year-old newswoman did not respond in the affirmative to her boyfriend at first. She shared that it took her some time to give Molner the answer he wanted. Her brain was still processing what was happening.

"It took me a while to say yes, because I was so confused!" she said.

Couric did eventually say yes and is looking forward to her second chance at a happy ending. She was left a widow in 1998 after her husband Jay Monahan died of colon cancer. Couric dated other men since then, but had not settled down with one. She had been primarily focused on raising her daughters Ellie, 21, and Carrie, 17.

"I knew that I wanted this," she said."I made it a priority, and I pursued it with some purpose."
