Sean "P. Diddy" Combs turned down a judging position on the upcoming season of American Idol because of his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez, Us Weekly reported Wednesday.
The site said that Combs was in talks to appear as a judge on the singing competition for their 13th season. Sources said that Combs could not get over his past with Lopez and her manager Benny Medina. Medina used to manage Combs. Combs famously dated Lopez from 1999 to 2001. He coined her moniker, J Lo.
Ultimately, the source said Combs felt it was a "'her or me'" situation. Lopez has not yet publicly commented on her return to American Idol, but insiders have confirmed that the 44-year-old superstar will grace the small screen in the fall.
Lopez will reportedly join Keith Urban on the show. He joined AI with much fanfare in 2012 with the likes of Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. Carey and Minaj announced in May that they would not be returning to the series after the season which was fraught with tension. At one point, Minaj seemingly threatened pop superstar Carey and the ratings hit a series low. Randy Jackson also left and sources indicated at the time that Idol wanted a complete revamp.
"All four are gone," one insider said. "They feel they've lost their core audience, and they want it back."
Casper Smart, J Lo's boyfriend, also revealed that the 44-year-old would come back to the show. TMZ reported on August 17 that Smart responded in the affirmative that his girlfriend of two years would be making a return engagement.
