Piers Morgan will not be deported after all.
As Reuters reports, citizens have flocked to the website We The People and signed a petition demanded that the CNN host be deported from the United States. Morgan has come under fire for his stance on gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting. At one point, he referred to a gun advocate on his talk show as a "unbelievably stupid man," per the Associated Press.
The petition has received over 100,000 signatures, well above the 25,000-signature minimum needed for a response from the White House. Jay Carney, the press secretary, wrote that Morgan has the right to express his views publicly.
"Let's not let arguments over the Constitution's Second Amendment violate the spirit of its First," Carney's statement said. "President Obama believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. However, the Constitution not only guarantees an individual right to bear arms, but also enshrines the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press -- fundamental principles that are essential to our democracy."
Morgan, meanwhile, responded to the White House's decision on Thursday's edition of "CBS This Morning."
"This is very bad news for the Americans and very good news for the Brits," Morgan joked, per the Huffington Post.
The host also insisted that this issue of gun control in the United States must be addressed.
"This debate must be heard loud and clear," Morgan continued. "I just don't believe that the majority of decent civilized Americans do not share my view that something has to give."
But even though Morgan won't be deported, that doesn't mean he will be staying in America. The host told the Daily Mail back in December that he would consider leaving the United States voluntarily if the country did not change its gun laws.
