Sean Penn discussed his previous marriages to Madonna and Robin Wright in an interview with Esquire magazine.

The actor admitted that he was never truly loved by either of his previous two brides.

"There is no shame in my saying that we all want to be loved by someone," Penn said. "As I look back over my life in romance, I don't feel I've ever had that. I have been the only one that was unaware of the fraud in a few of these circumstances blindly."

"When you get divorced, all the truths that come out, you sit there and you go, What the f**k was I doing?" Penn continued. "What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way? Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense. It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me."

The actor was married to Madonna for around four years before the couple split up in 1989, according to US Weekly. He married Wright seven years later, only to divorce the "Princess Bride" actress in 2010. According to People, the two actually began divorce proceedings in 2007, only to reunite a few months later. They then briefly split and got back together in 2009 before officially breaking up for good in August 2010.

At the time, Wright told Redbook magazine that she wanted to remain friends with Penn after their divorce. Later, she told the Times in England that there was never a dull moment in her marriage to Sean Penn.

"I would use the words 'definitely never boring' to describe our marriage," Wright said in that interview, per the Huffington Post. "It was exciting and difficult. I spent most of my life with this person."
