Billy Scott of the R&B group Georgia Prophets passed away in his Charlotte, North Carolina, home after a battle with pancreatic and liver cancer. He was 70-years-old.
Born Peter Pendleton of Huntington, West Virginia, Scott sang with various groups while serving the Army. However, after he was discharged in 1965, he permanently changed his name to Billy Scott and began to record music as "The Prophets" with his wife, Barbara, in 1966.
The Prophets pioneered the beach music genre, a variant of R&B that had grown popular in Carolina. The Prophets earned their first gold record with "I Got the Fever" in 1968. Next, the "Georgia Prophets" would continue making hits including "California" and Seaside Love."
Finally, in 1999, Billy Scott and his band's contribution to beach music earned the singer a place in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
