It appears that the on-screen drama of "The Vampire Diaries" may be affecting the real life community of Covington, G.A., the town the CW films in.
Part of Newton County, Georgia; Covington is a small town with a population of a little over 13,000. It's also the real life version of "The Vampire Diaries" very own Mystic Falls. While the town of Mystic Falls in overrun with supernatural beings like vampires, werewolves and witches, Covington is overrun with...actors and film crews!
In Mystic Falls, Elena, Damon, Stefan and the others had to deal with the Council and their anti-vampire brigade. In real life, Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley and the others have to deal with the Covington City Council and their distaste for late night and early morning filming.
According to the Covington News, a committee is forming at the next City Council meeting to discuss the "pros and cons of having 'The Vampire Diaries' film in Covington." The committee will be responsible of putting together guidelines that the filming crew would be responsible for following
"Covington is obviously the Hollywood of the South," Mayor Ronnie Johnston told the Covington News. "We are what we are and we need to get a little bit friendlier to our residents and to the filming. I think it's time we actually put together a committee and actually look at those things."
The main issue in Covington seems to be the time that "The Vampire Diaries" is filming...but it's not just at night! As "Vampire Diaries" fans are well aware, the Mystic Falls vamps are fortunate enough to have "daylight" rings, which means that they are not just restricted to the night, and neither are the filming crews! According to Nancy Whirley, owner of Speedway Properties, her renters complain of filming not only occurring during long hours of the night, but how early they start in the morning. Whirley added that the number of people hanging out in the streets with equipment is also a concern for residents.
"I'm not saying that I don't want filming in Covington; I'm all for it," Christina Cabe, a resident, expressed. "But I'm asking that you all please consider the full impact on all the residents and that you all try to look after our well-being first please."
While the town definitely have concerns about the show being on location, many do realize how well it has impacted Covington as well. One store owner acknowledged that her sales have more than doubled since "The Vampire Diaries" began filming on the town square. Covington has even set up "Mystic Fall Tours" which attracts international fans of the show to the small Southern town.
Covington does not want to evict "The Vampire Diaries," but it appears that the show will be getting some stricter guidelines.
"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. on the CW.
