Demi Lovato is using her star power to make a difference. The " Give Your Heart A Break" singer is the new ambassador for Secret's "Mean Stinks" campaign, which encourages young girls to end bullying in schools.
"I heard about the program last year, and thought it was such a great opportunity," Lovato said. "They're really trying to put an end to bullying."
The 20-year-old spread some positivity to students at New York City's Young Women's Leadership school on Thursday and asked the young ladies to pledge to a "Drama Free School Year" by means of a pinky swear. Sealing the oath, each student painted their pinky fingers with blue nail polish.
"I'll definitely be wearing [the nail polish] starting soon," Lovato said. "It's a conversation starter: 'Hey, why is your pinky blue?' 'This is a pinky promise that I'm not going to bully people, that me and my friends are ganging up for good.' "
Secret is doing their part by donating $1 for every Mean Stinks Clinical Strength deodorant purchased.
Although she was a Disney darling, Lovato wasn't part of the popular crowd in school. "I had a really tough time when I was in middle school," she revealed to People Magazine. "People would write 'hate petitions' [about me] and send them around to be signed. They'd have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They'd come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away."
"Back then, there were times I didn't think I'd be able to move on," she admitted.
In 2010, the 20-year-old checked herself into rehab for "emotional and physical issues."
"Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help," her rep said in a statement. "She is doing just that. Demi and her family ask that the media please respect their privacy during this difficult time. She regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future."
According to a close friend of the Lovato family, some of the singer's issues stemmed from being bullied in school. "She was bullied in school. She fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting. ... Demi is taking control by getting help," the source said after Lovato checked into rehab.
