Jessica Simpson Faces Backlash Over Released Bikini Picture Of Baby Maxwell

On a recent appearance on the "Katie" show, Jessica Simpson, 31, shared a charming picture of her four-month-old daughter Maxwell Drew wearing what appeared to be a homemade crochet yellow two-piece. She might have expected an avalanche of cute sighs over the adorable picture but is getting the opposite instead.

Critics are calling the photograph 'wrong' and 'just awful.'

Claude Knights, the director of "Kidscape"(a charity in the UK based on children safety) deemed the outfit "highly inappropriate" and went on to chastise Simpson for what he perceived as a serious lack of parental judgment.

"It is very disturbing to see a young baby presented to the world wearing a bikini," he told the Daily Mail. "Celebrity choices carry great influence, as can be seen by the manner in which their accessories and manners are copied widely."

"It is hoped that parents will understand that 'baby bikinis' are totally inappropriate and that they contribute to the sexualization and commercialization of childhood." Knights continued. "We should not be compromising the sanctity of our children's early years."

In a report released last year about the sexualization of children, Reg Bailey, chief executive of the Mothers' Union, said: 'Parents are telling us they are worried about the pressures on children to grow up too quickly.'

In defense of Simpson, it's likely she didn't consider the controversy the picture might have created when she released it on national television - and merely wanted to show baby Maxwell off.

Not too long ago, the new mother couldn't help but gush about her little girl on Twitter. "She is insanely beautiful," she said. "I can't help but play dress up!"

"Motherhood is a dream," the Fashion Star mentor told People magazine. "It really is absolutely amazing.

The word amazing was also used to describe fiancé Eric Johnson, 32. "Eric is amazing. He is involved with every single thing, and Maxwell adores him," a source said. "Whenever she cries, he picks her up and holds her in his arms, and she immediately stops crying. It's the cutest thing."

Simpson echoed the sentiment, saying, "People call him the best dad in the world. Even my dad calls him that!" she boasted. "He can do everything. He can change every diaper . . . he's just a very peaceful person."

Maxwell is the first child for the couple, who got engaged in 2010 but decided to put their wedding on hold to focus on their adorable little girl.

"I'm in heaven." Jessica said after giving birth to baby Maxwell. "Creating a family is the best thing I have ever done."
