Sad news for Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates, 64. The "Misery" star confirmed she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago and has since undergone a double mastectomy.
"After much consideration, I underwent a double mastectomy," the Academy Award-winning actress revealed to People magazine. "Luckily, I don't have to undergo radiation or chemo. My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception."
"My doctors have assured me I'm going to be around for a long time," she continued. "I'm looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do."
This isn't the first time Bates has battled cancer. In a recent appearance on "Anderson Live," the actress revealed her bout with ovarian cancer nine years prior - which she kept a secret because of work.
"I was advised to [do so]," Bates, told Anderson Cooper on his show back in March. "I was contracted to go into a movie at that time, Little Black Book with Brittany Murphy, who I miss very much. My doctors at the time, they had to get insurance approval and all of that so I was very quiet about it and had to go back to work right away."
Bates also refrained from going public with the news because she wanted to keep her private affairs, well, private. "Nobody else really knows what you're going through except another cancer patient," she said. "Even though your family's supportive and surrounds you, I just got to the point where I would go to chemo by myself and just really go through it on my own."
"I admire people who have been open, like Melissa Etheridge and women I see walking around facing it without wigs and all of that stuff," she concluded. "I think I'd be more courageous next time."
Kathy, we wish you a speedy recovery.
