Last night the 2012 Teen Choice Award winners were crowned, the collective teen voice was heard, and a lot of young celebrities were suddenly struck by the realization that they haven't learned to surf yet.
The night was full of unique highlights. Selena Gomez, who looked like she would have been happy with a giant surf board and her fans' undying adoration for her 20th birthday also got a cake and a window-shaking rendition of "Happy Birthday" from the entire audience. Her exit strategy with said cake was so awkward it seems like the treat and attention were a genuine surprise.
Another big event for the TCA was No Doubt's live performance, the band's first in over ten years. They sang "Settle Down," the track they leaked a sample of last week off their upcoming album "Push and Shove." It was reassuring to see Gwen Stefani's energy and love of tank tops remains intact.
The show provided plenty of smaller moments too, like close ups of Taylor Swift unselfconsciously rocking out to every musical performance as well as a complete rundown of hosts Demi Lovato and Kevin McHale's tattoos.
"The Hunger Games" was the big winner of the night, scooping up seven awards including choice lip-lock, choice movie (sci-fi/ fantasy), choice book, choice male scene stealer, choice villain, choice movie actor (sci-fi/fantasy), and choice actress (sci-fi/fantasy). On the TV side "The Vampire Diaries" went home with five awards and Justin Bieber was the musician who added the most surfboards to his collection, accepting four including one for male fashion icon.
