Katie Holmes shockingly filed for divorce from Tom Cruise yesterday, a move that it is said to have "blindsided" the actor.
"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People magazine. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," Cruise's rep told People magazine. "Please allow them their privacy."
Many reports are pointing to Criuse's religion Scientology as the issue. Reportedly, Holmes did not want the couple's daughter Suri involved heavily with the church, thus resulting in her asking for sole legal custody of Suri.
Cruise has been a Scientologist since 1990, when his first wife, Mimi Rogers, introduced him to it and is heavily involved with the church. When Cruise and Holmes first married, Holmes was a Catholic, but it was reported that she converted to Scientology. However, now with the filing of the divorce and the reported reason for it, it certainly ask the question if Holmes was ever comfortable with Scientology.
Back when Tom Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman, it was reported that Kidman was not comfortable with religion and when they divorced that she did not like that their adopted children together were being raised in it.
Scientology seems that it is a central theme in all of Cruise's marriages and could be a recurring issue in the marriages and his personal life. If Scientology is the reason that Holmes filed for divorce it will be interesting to see how Cruise reacts and what he does regarding it. Maybe the next time he will date someone who is a fellow scientologist or maybe he will step back from Scientology. What happens remains to be seen.
