You might remember Raffaello Follieri as the the man who dated actress Anne Hathaway. Or you might remember the Italian businessman as the gentleman who was charged with 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. Either way, Follieri sat down with People magazine to dish on former beau Anne Hathaway and his time in prison.
Raffaello Follieri was 29-years-old when he was arrested in 2008 on charges of posing as a representative of the Vatican to "fleece wealthy investors in a real estate company that sought to buy and redevelop Roman Catholic Church property." The Associated Press reported at the time that the Follieri's bail had been set at $21 million. He was also reported to have "improperly spent" up to $6 million on a lavish lifestyle which included private chartered jet travel with an unidentified girlfriend. The girlfriend has long been believed to be Hathaway.
Hathaway's ex-boyfriend pleaded guilty to the charges, and was released from the Pennsylvania federal prison this past May. TMZ reported that the Italian businessman was immediately deported upon his release.
People magazine caught up with the ex-convict in Rome where he revealed that he was "very much in love" with Hathaway.
Hathaway got engaged to actor/jewelry designer Adam Shulman this past November. The two began dating in 2008 after Hathaway and Follieri's highly publicized breakup.
According to Follieri though, "we were talking about marriage." Follieri, now 33-years-old, acknowledges the mistakes he made, telling People that, "I though my life was over. But I learned to survive by focusing on getting through one day at a time."
Hathaway told People magazine in 2010 that she "hates" talking about her breakup with Follieri. "I don't want it to define me, but as is to be expected, there were a lot of lingering trust issues."
