Mickey Mouse may be the most famous cartoon ever done by Walt Disney, but the lovable mouse is not the first. Before Mickey Mouse there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Walt Disney's first major successful cartoon when he was an illustrator at Universal Studios. Disney, would of course go on to leave Universal after he found out that his contract would not allow him to control the character. However, while at Universal, Disney created 26 cartoons featuring Oswald.
This year is the 85th anniversary of the character and Disney is celebrating by releasing the earliest known animation by Walt Disney of Oswald to Yahoo! News. This release was made possible in 2006 when Disney CEO Bob Iger regained the rights to the character. Oswald first appeared in the 2010 video game "Disney Epic Mickey" and then in the sequel, "Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two," out Nov. 18.
