Best known as the creator of Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, George Lucas explained the true meaning of Star Wars during his surprise appearance at the 40th Star Wars Celebration last April 13-16, 2017 held in Orlando.

The founder of the Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic, George Lucas revealed that Star Wars was meant to be a film for 12-year-olds. His main idea was to make a space adventure film like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers which he loved as a kid. He wanted to make films aimed at pre-teens with meaningful, psychological themes. A film for children who were about to get into the big world, away from the protective eyes of their parents.

George Lucas wanted to send a message to the kids about the significance of being who they are and should be in the real world, and the value of friendship, honesty, trust. Lucas intended the film to teach the young about doing the right thing, about choosing to live on the light side and avoiding the dark side, as reported by The Huffington Post.

In another interview, American filmmaker and entrepreneur George Lucas said that he wanted "the young to be interested in space exploration, to get beyond the stupidities of the moment and think about colonizing Venus and Mars" as reported by Biography.

The Star Wars epic space opera showed the spectacular adventures of different kinds of characters in a far away galaxy a long time ago. With his first Star Wars film, Lucas successfully started a new era of movie-making, complete with special effects, and blending mythology, history and fairy tale.

As it turned out, what American filmmaker and entrepreneur George Lucas started as an adventure film for 12 yr. olds in 1977, Star Wars became a pop culture phenomenon around the world. With a budget of only $11 million for the first film, Star Wars grossed over $513 million on its first release worldwide. All the seven Star Wars films were nominated for Academy Awards and have been a commercial success with a combined box office revenue of over $7.5 billion, making Star Wars the third highest grossing film series, as reported by The Numbers.
