Elton John Snubs Dolce & Gabbana for Calling Babies Born Through Surrogates "Synthetic Children"
Music icon Sir Elton John vows to "never wear Dolce & Gabbana ever again." The legendary singer-songwriter is furious at Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the founders of the Italian luxury industry fashion house named after them, for remarks they have made which were published in the Italian-language magazine Panorama.
According to BBC, Dolce and Gabbana who are both gay and have been a couple for over twenty years told Panorama: "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed." Dolce in particular maintained: "You are born to a mother and a father - or at least that's how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalogue." And Gabbana added: "The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging."
John, who has two children with his husband David Furnish born through a surrogate, on Sunday posted on his Instagram account a photo of the two Italian designers during their younger days, captioned: "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic.' And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again." He ended his post with the hashtag "#BoycottDolceGabbana" calling on his social media followers to boycott the luxury fashion label.
John's call to boycott Dolce & Gabbana drew the support of such celebrities as fellow gay parents Ryan Murphy and Rick Martin. Former tennis star Martina Navratilova in particular also posted on her social media pages "Right on Elton and David. My D&G shirts are going in the bin- don't want ANYONE to wear them." and "Wow - I had no idea. It will be interesting to see if this ridiculousness hurts them in the bank. BoycottDolceGabbana."
